Spotting fake profiles and scams: 8 warning signs

Hands holding a glowing smartphone in a dark room

Most people you meet online are who they say they are. Still, it is smart to know the signs of a fake profile. Scammers like to target platforms where generosity plays a role, such as sugar dating, and they often follow the same pattern. Recognise that pattern and you stop in time. That goes for a sugar baby who meets a fake sugar daddy, and just as much the other way round. In this article you will read the eight warning signs to look out for, and what to do when you are in doubt.

Why scammers target dating

In dating you show something of yourself and hope for a connection. That makes people open, and that is exactly what scammers exploit. They build trust quickly, play on emotions and then create urgency. This applies to the Member, but just as much to the Gentleman: he too sometimes hears a story about a ticket, a bill or an emergency.

The good news: the signs are almost always the same. You do not have to distrust everyone. You only need to know when to pause.

The 8 warning signs of a fake profile or sugar daddy scam

1. Money is requested before you have met

This is the clearest sign. Someone you have never seen who asks for money, gift cards, crypto or an advance is almost certainly not genuine. Real generosity only grows once you know each other, and it is never demanded. How an honest conversation about it does go is covered in discussing generosity and support.

2. Paying first to receive something

A well-known trick: someone promises you support, but first you have to pay a small "verification fee", transaction costs or a registration. Or a transfer arrives with a request to send part of it back or to buy gift cards. Such a payment often turns out to be reversed or fake later. The rule is simple: someone who wants to support you never asks you to pay first.

3. Wanting to leave the platform straight away

Does someone want to move to WhatsApp, Telegram or another channel after just a few messages? That can be innocent, but scammers do it deliberately: off the platform there is no oversight and they can no longer be reported. Take your time and stay in the chat until you know someone better.

4. Promises that are too good to be true

Big promises about trips, gifts or support in the very first conversation? It may feel flattering, but it is a classic lure. Genuine people promise little and would rather show who they are.

5. Photos that do not add up

Watch out for profiles with only one or two photos that look like modelling work or advertising. A tip: run a reverse image search on a photo. If the same picture turns up under another name, you know enough. What a real, strong profile looks like is covered in writing a sugar dating profile that works.

6. No video call, always an excuse

A short video call before a first meeting is perfectly normal. Someone who keeps putting it off with a broken camera, a bad connection or a busy schedule often has a reason. Stay friendly, but only arrange to meet once you know the person matches the photos.

7. Urgency, pressure and emergencies

Scammers work with time pressure. Suddenly there is a sick relative, a stuck payment or a flight that must be booked today. The more urgent the story, the more important it is not to act quickly. A real connection can always wait.

8. Requests for sensitive details

Nobody needs your bank details, login codes, a copy of your ID or your full address to get to know you. Never share them in the chat. You can also keep your employer or surname to yourself until you trust someone. More on that in dating discreetly.

What Seek For Sugar does

Every profile on Seek For Sugar is reviewed by hand before it becomes visible, and every profile has at least one real profile photo. All members are 18+. We take reports seriously and act on them quickly. Even so, your own instinct remains the most important first check: no review sees what you notice in a conversation.

In doubt? Here is what to do

  • End the conversation as soon as someone asks for money or personal details. You owe nobody an explanation.
  • Report the profile using the button on the profile or in the chat, so we can check it.
  • Pay nothing and do not buy gift cards, even if the amount seems small.
  • Keep the messages, so you can show what happened.
  • Already paid? Contact your bank immediately. In the Netherlands you can turn to the Fraudehelpdesk, in Belgium to the police.

In short

You recognise a fake profile or sugar daddy scam by a fixed pattern: quick trust, big promises, urgency and eventually a request for money or details. Knowing that lets you date with peace of mind. Only meet after a good conversation, meet in a public place and follow the tips in safe sugar dating: 10 agreements with yourself. Ready for a first meeting?
